A few days ago I started digging through one of many old boxes of slides. I like this picture. It was taken in 1980, a few years after we moved into our current house on Potrero Hill. I remember the clothesline with fondness. My washing machine was on the back porch upon old redwood stilts, 3 stories up.

During earthquakes the whole back of our house would sway. It still does but not so intensely since we reinforced back there. You can see the old stilts on the left side of the photo.

Here are the back stairs after the house was built next door. The smell of Hills Brother’s burnt coffee from the company’s plant up the street permeated the exposed wood on the house. So did the smell of hops from Anchor Steam. 15 years later when we tore down the stairs to rebuild them, we found they were hanging by one humongous nail.

I needed to rely on guessing to line this shot up. The roses were floating in a bowl on a shelf, underneath another shelf of a cart that served iced cucumber water at a spa in Calistoga. I knew the flowers were gorgeous but didn’t know to what extent until I got to see this image on my computer.
In person they could only be seen from the side, not close up, not scrutinized. They were a beautiful understated splash of color that heightened my already pampered and relaxed state of mind.
Is this another trick to do in our own homes? Spots of floating flowers to make us feel like we are on vacation. Tell me if you start doing this and send me a picture.

Most of the time I am unconscious about wether I am seen or not. Wether I am invisible, go below the radar or stand out like a soar thumb. Sometimes I feel my mouth and it feels stiff, like why isn’t it just comfortable and relaxed into a smile. Sometimes I feel the smile and it makes me happy… like… OH! I am smiling… I am happy… yes this is good… happiness. I can right now smile about that and think of being happy and become happy!

Sometimes with family members who I really want to be loved by, I notice how I may appear to them, perhaps how unlovable or in a good moment they are smiling at me and I know they are feeling good about us talking or good about themselves and that reflects back to me. They give me a gift. So I guess I bounce back and forth between those situations of being unconscious and wrapped up in the world and really present or absorbed in how I appear or fit in at the moment. Hmmmmm. What about you? Let me know.
